She especially can't stand the judgmental and arrogant Darius. When the wealthy Darcy family moves in across the street, Zuri wants nothing to do with their two teenage sons, even as her older sister, Janae, starts to fall for the charming Ainsley. But pride might not be enough to save her rapidly gentrifying neighborhood from becoming unrecognizable. Brooklyn pride, family pride, and pride in her Afro-Latino roots. A smart, funny, gorgeous retelling starring all characters of color. In a timely update of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, National Book Award finalist Ibi Zoboi skillfully balances cultural identity, class, and gentrification against the heady magic of first love in her vibrant reimagining of this beloved classic. Although I'm no expert, I didn't catch myself going "yea right?" over and over again as I read. The occultism seemed well researched and believable. I love to travel too so that helped draw me into the story-line. Wow, what a mix! Anyway, it reminded me of The Da Vinci Code with the characters traveling all over trying to unravel the mysteries of the ancient occult. I found this book to be great fantasy and mystery reading with a nice blend of occultism, historical fiction, science fiction with present day technology. As I said "well written." Simon did a great job of pulling at the readers emotions and mixing the two main characters story lines until a climatic end. The story unfolds in a natural way and isn't rushed but at the same time the reader doesn't get bored either. I found it to be well written with plenty of fast-paced twists and turns to keep you interested. I really enjoyed the smooth writing style of Simon W. These individuals fought battles both personal and political, often without the support of family or friends, frequently under the threat of violence and persecution. By shining a light on these remarkable stories of bravery and determination, THE BOOK OF PRIDE not only honors an important chapter in American history, but also empowers young people today (both LGBTQ and straight) to discover their own courage in order to create positive change. THE BOOK OF PRIDE captures the true story of the gay rights movement from the 1960s to the present, through richly detailed, stunning interviews with the leaders, activists, and ordinary people who witnessed the movement and made it happen. |
